Notification of Parents of Screening and Referral Process for gifted services
The goal of educational services for gifted students in Echols County is to provide for the extensions of learning opportunities, the development of individual potential, the enhancement of the student's self-concept and the advancement toward becoming an independent learner through differentiated curricula beyond the opportunities and experiences of the regular classroom. Nominations can be made by classroom teachers, special area teachers, parent or guardian, the child himself or herself, or any responsible person who has knowledge of the student's intellectual function. Students are tested in four areas: Mental Ability, achievement, creativity, and motivation. To be eligible for gifted services, students must either: (a) score greater than or equal to 99th percentile (for grades K-12) or greater than or equal to 96th percentile for grades 3-12 on a standardized mental ability test. To qualify in the area of achievement, students must score greater than or equal to the 90th percentile on the total battery, total math, or total reading section(s) of a standardized achievement test. They may also qualify through a multiple criteria assessment by meeting the criteria in any three of the four areas mentioned above. The Echols County School System screens students for eligibility for gifted services twice a year. The screenings will occur in the months of October (ITBS) and May (CRCT). Transfer Students - students new to Echols County Schools and for whom we have documentation that they were identified as gifted in another state. Automatic Screening - At the beginning of the school year, the previous year's test scores will be reviewed by the Gifted Teacher. Standardized Tests (ITBS) Students must have a minimum of an 85th percentile in two of the three areas: Total Reading, Total Math, and Complete Battery OR students must have a minimum of a 90th percentile in one of the following: Total Reading, Total Math, or Complete Battery. Criterion-Referenced Competency Test Students must score in the top 20 percent on the reading or mathematics section when compared to all other students in the system Grades (high school only) Students must have an overall cumulative average of 95 or greater Students who meet either the automatic screening OR are transfer students AND who have supporting data gathered from test history, and products are referred for gifted placement testing. Once referred to testing: Parents receive the Parent Notification for Testing Consent Form. Student is tested for the gifted program. Parents receive test results. If state eligibility is determined, students are placed in the Echols County Schools Gifted Program.
